As students across the UK enjoy their summer break, we at Vekta Group are proud to support the next generation of sustainability leaders through initiatives like the Nuffield Research Placements for summer 2024. Spearheaded by Hannah Jukes, our Geo-Spatial Data Team Lead, we had the privilege of hosting two exceptional students this summer.
Exploring Vertical Farming Opportunities:
Under the guidance of Supervisor Mark Lawson, one student investigated the potential of vertical farming—a system of food production in controlled, indoor environments that could revolutionize food security. This project focused on the economics, energy consumption, and the integration of vertical farming with renewable energy projects, offering a glimpse into the future of sustainable agriculture.
Harnessing the Power of Deep Learning:
Supervised by Rogerio Wong, our second student delved into the world of neural networks and deep learning, identifying areas within the renewables sector where these technologies can be applied. From exploring geospatial datasets to prototyping deep learning models, this project aimed to build strong foundational knowledge and explore the practical applications of AI in driving the renewable energy revolution.
We’re thrilled to see such passion and innovation from the younger generation, and we’re committed to nurturing this talent as we work together towards a sustainable future.
